Leroy Burgess: “KING PHAROAH.
The best music is quiet. Subtle.
It catches you before you can catch it.
Maestro Sanders was a Master of it.
Those in the know... knew.
Without all the bells and whistles of mainstream media and the press. His music spoke.. and they listened.
And knew.
Now, as his Spirit returns to the Celestial plane.. those who knew remember. And find nothing but gratitude in their hearts... to have been witness to Greatness.
MAY GOD/ALLAH RECEIVE HIM WELL.”
Kirk Degiorgio: “Here is a little personal story. When I was eleven, my Aunt gave me her collection of 7” records. She was a clubber in London circa 76-79 and the records were all the big tracks of that time. Funk, soul and disco. Amongst them was Lonnie Liston Smith ‘Space Princess’ and it quickly became a firm favourite. Thereafter, I always looked out for Lonnie Liston Smith records. On a family holiday to Italy in the early eighties I found a great record store. Flicking through the racks I saw an album with Lonnie Liston Smith credited as pianist. It was called Thembi by Pharoah Sanders. It had a lovely thick gatefold sleeve and I took a chance and bought it. When I got it home and played it - I was transported to a spiritual realm of music of such intensity that I will never forget. It taught me that disco/club music can be a gateway… never to judge or be elitist. It’s still an album I play regularly. RIP Pharoah - the original astral traveler.”
Marc Mac: “The Creator Has A Master Plan. Someone once asked, “what was the best show I’ve ever been to?” I replied @pharoahsandersofficial, one New Years Eve night in London. Rest In Peace king. The spirit from within came through that saxophone. We are loosing the irreplaceable.”
Mark de-Clive Lowe: “Thank you grandmaster for your immeasurable contribution to and reflection of humanity. we’ve been so truly blessed to experience your creations and find inspiration in every note you shared. Love and deepest condolences to Tomoki and all the family.”

I went to a Pharoah concert an Dingwalls in Camdem London United kingdom. I think it was the late 90s, I have never seen or heard anything like it before or after, this man was playing the saxophone without blowing into it and using a Five Buddha Singing Bowl under the microphone to make the room shake, move from side to side and spin in a circle.
I have never experienced music being played like he did,
I find it hard to explain how i felt before and after the concert it was that amazing.
This man produced music that i think sounded better then his records, unless you were there, i have problems trying to give an inside account of the night.
No one else has done or did what he did, in my life, on that night.
Others who i did not know were present later confirmed what i when through because they did also.
Other people have said to me they also were shocked by what he did .
I have heard Yusef Lateef can do similar things as Pharoah but i missed his concert at the same venue, The world is at a loss when artists like these pass because no one is coming up from the same past and we have lost the future talent.
I went to a Pharoah concert at the Jazz Cafe at a later date in the same area and the experience was totally different and i would say a failure which i think was,is due to the venue and the acoustics.
Maybe you need a venue built like a studio.
25 years later i still cannot forget it.
